LS2 joins the Light Mobility Cluster
December 2024. Last month we had the opportunity to interview Giuseppe Porcu, CEO of LS2, as the brand became a new associate member of the Light Mobility Cluster. I was really impressed by the vision, values and innovation that are driving LS2's business growth. Here is the interview:
What is LS2 and how did it come about? What are your mission and core values?
LS2 is Chinese for "in the way of the Liao family". The brand was founded in October 2007, but the Liao family, consisting of brothers Arthur and Paul, have been making helmets since 1990. In fact, June this year marked the 35th anniversary of the company's establishment in China.
Our mission can be summed up in two words: "affordable quality". We want to ensure the highest level of quality and safety in helmets and motorcycle gear at an affordable price for everyone.
How would you describe the LS2 team? What kind of professionals work in the company and what makes them different?
The LS2 team consists of members from MHR (the factory where LS2 helmets and gear are made), supported by external engineers and designers. From day one, the Liao brothers have emphasised the importance of teamwork and encouraged everyone to be the best they can be. As a result, customer expectations have risen, and we work hard to attract the best professionals so that we can continue to grow and improve.
How important is innovation to your business and how do you apply it in your day-to-day operations?
Innovation is key. We focus a lot on materials. Expanding our range of carbon fibre helmets is a good example of this, as is our use of Sympatex membranes, which is an LS2 patent for clothing. Our constant search for new solutions includes working with our professional riders. This year we have 8 riders in the World Championship: 1 in MotoGP, 3 in Moto2 and 4 in Moto3, as well as 2 in WSBK, 2 in WorldSPP, 1 in WorldSPP300 and 2 in WorldWCR. On the off-road front, our rider Edgar Canet triumphed in the Rally2 category at the last Dakar Rally with the world's first FIM homologated helmet. The riders are incredibly important to us because they push our materials, aerodynamics and comfort to the limit.
What is your value proposition? What does the company offer to the mobility sector and how does it differ from your competitors?
We are one of the few manufacturers that have stayed in the sector, a family-owned company that continues to work and invest to improve its products and expand its offering to customers.
We are going through a generational change, which means that the values that have helped us grow and be present in 128 countries today will guide us for decades to come.
In general terms, what is the impact of the mobility industry in Spain? Can you talk about its economic, social and environmental impact?
Spain is a world leader in the motorcycle industry. This presence is particularly evident in the professional riders who compete in the world's top championships. But there is also an industry in Spain that perfectly represents not only motorcycle brands, but everything related to parts and accessories. This world could contribute even more if companies were seen as partners at all levels to improve mobility, including the environment and user safety.
What are the company's future projects and plans? How do you want to position yourself in the market and what is your long-term goal?
We want to continue to improve everything we do. We are the market leader in many of the countries where we are present, either directly or through our distributors. There is still a lot to do and the road ahead is long with many twists and turns, which we enjoy. What will LS2 be tomorrow? That depends on us, the passion and commitment we continue to put into our work and the desire to improve every day.
Why did you decide to join the Light Mobility Cluster? What do you expect from the ecosystem and what can you contribute?
For a company that sees innovation as key, joining the cluster is essential. Being alongside start-ups while offering our experience is something LS2 needs to do in order to continue to be an active part of the fantastic world of motorcycles. We want to turn the passion that unites millions of motorcyclists worldwide into a way to improve people's lives.
Finally, could you share a phrase that defines your company culture?
Our motto is ALWAYS AHEAD - "siempre adelante" and there's nothing that better represents us.
